| Uber appears primed to commence self-driving airman in San Francisco |
Umber appears to be preparing to launch a fleet of self-driving cars in San Francisco, expanding on its existing self-driving pilot in Pittsburgh. CENT discovered
a fleet of Umber branded Volvo and Ford vehicles in a warehouse in San
Francisco, complete with self-driving sensors and camera hardware.
The site says the vehicles will launch “very soon,”
perhaps allowing San Francisco Umber users to receive a ride from an
autonomous car when booking a trip. Not much else is known about the
project, and Umber has not yet received an Autonomous Vehicle Testing Permit from the State of California.
Umber and Volvo entered into an industrial partnership
back in August, with Umber installing its self-driving technology into
the Swedish firm’s XC90 Subs. There was no transfer of autonomous
driving (AD) tech between the firms, however — both Volvo and Umber will
continue developing their AD hardware and software independently.
Umber did not immediately return a request for comment.
